The last thing her late husband ever gave her was a brand new Nikon Coolpix camera. Nily Harel didn't consider herself much of a photographer, aside from snapping a few pictures on vacations, but learning to take photos quickly became a way for Harel to cope when her life partner died more than six years ago.

Studios on the Park in downtown Paso Robles is opening a new show Saturday night entitled "The Short Story Collection: Narrative Gowns and Feminine Histories."

When she saw it, she knew. That little black dress hanging on the rack at the thrift store was absolutely meant to go home with San Luis Obispo artist Julie Frankel.

It all started with a bunch of old, broken-down cars. Paso Robles photographer Dean Crawford was telling a friend at a local photo guild meeting that he was looking to shoot some gorgeous, vintage, rusty vehicles. Fellow photographer, and at this point virtual stranger, Deb Hofstetter, overheard, leaned in, and said, "I know a place ... ."

She had never painted-not really-and her hands were slowly getting weaker each and every day. Melodie Jordan had some leftover paint from finishing her Atascadero home. Within five months both her mom and niece had died, and she didn't know what do with all her grief and sadness. So she picked up the can of paint, a brush, and an old painting bought from Goodwill, and got to work. The end result was a tempestuous sea landscape filled with calming shades of teal and blue alongside stormy blacks and grays. Several years later, Jordan is now a full-time professional artist who has never taken a lesson.

At their meeting Tuesday night, the Paso Robles City Council approved an ordinance to set up a procedure allowing residents to paint original and vintage art murals on private buildings. The procedure follows one developed in Portland, Oregon which allows artists to meet with neighbors to get their approval for murals on private buildings. An example of such a mural is on the north side of Spring Seafood Bar & Grill at 1215 Spring Street in Paso Robles. One of the issues which the council discussed thoroughly, what if people complain about a mural after it's painted on a building.

One of Central California's most charming towns is an easy drive from both San Francisco and Los Angeles. Paso Robles is a half an hour from the Pacific Ocean and is home to great local wineries and fun bars and restaurants.
