Transitions-Mental Health Association (TMHA) is seeking art inspired by living mentally well for consideration as the featured piece in the 2020 Opening Minds art show. This competition is open to individuals of all ages either in recovery or with loved ones in recovery from mental illness and/or a substance use disorder. Only one piece of art will be selected during this juried submission process. The exhibition is scheduled to run Thursday, April 30, through Sunday, May 31, 2020, at Studios on the Park is Paso Robles.

There's more to bringing kiddos to Downtown Paso Robles than hitting up the library and the playground. Take the nonprofit Studios on the Park, for example. At 1130 Pine St., this creative space may look like just another fancy art gallery primed with pretty things for your children to crash into. But ... did you know it has a free kids nook? And workshops for littles? Or, a walk-up watercolor art bar? To be honest, I didn't know either. But, it's true. While Studios is a welcome respite for art-lovers amid downtown's bustling tasting rooms, shops and eateries, it's also a fun spot for your littlest downtown-goers.

While some artists are obsessed with making two-dimensional art look three-dimensional, Paso Robles artist Nancy Vest simply prefers to make art that is actually three-dimensional.

The days of pulling out the old Thomas Guide from the glove compartment are over, but the world of cartography still merits exploration for the history it reveals about how the world was navigated. In the age of the iPhone, the art of reading an actual map is indeed a lost skill. But maps themselves can still be art, even if their practical knowledge is lost on many a millennial, at least according to San Luis Obispo artist Ellen November.

Somewhere between selling 6,000 comic books a month as a high school student, and producing the mega-hit The Walking Dead, David Alpert has learned a thing or two about "Taking the Weird and Making it Great." And he shared those lessons at a tell-all evening of the same title during a recent visit to San Luis Obispo County. The event was the first in a series of Creative Chats at Studios on the Park in Paso Robles.
