Public gets free art lessons at California Mid-State Fair

By Tonya Strickland

Paso Robles nonprofit organization Studios on the Park has returned to the California Mid-State Fair to offer fairgoers free art lessons by local artists.

The artists will be set up at a station inside the Frontier Pavilion every day from 4 to
5 p.m. to teach printmaking. The lesson will involve drawing an image on tracing paper, transferring the illustration to foam blocks and then making a print. Supplies are included.

“It’s a chance for people to roll up their sleeves and get into the creative process,” said Sasha Irving, executive director of Studios on the Park. “Our mission is to share the creative process with everyone — to go where the people are. And I can’t think of a better place to do that than at our local fair.”

The group’s sessions at the fair are designed to promote its Kids Art Smart program, which has provided more than 5,000 local schoolchildren with free fine art classes in mediums such as watercolor, collage and ceramics since its inception in 2011.

The printmaking sessions at the fair are free and open to both kids and adults. The fair runs through Aug. 2 at the Paso Robles Event Center.
