Studios on the Park highlights work of incarcerated individuals and poses questions about restorative justice

Community Invited to Landmark Exhibition & Events at Studios on the Park

While riding Amtrak's Coast Starlight train from Los Angeles to Seattle is spectacular -- following the coast for nearly 350 miles, traveling through mountains and rolling hills, including Mount Shasta, Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Rainier -- it can be an even greater adventure if you plan to stop at some of the amazing destinations along the route.

Husbands and wives. Brothers and sisters. Sons and fathers. Moms and daughters. Man and dog. Love is the common theme connecting them all.

More than 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered in water. On a smaller scale, about 60 percent of the human body is made up of water. So naturally when artist Deprise Brescia learned about Dr. Masaru Emoto's work with water crystals, she was hooked on the concept.

Almost everything is better off with a good, solid soundtrack, whether it's the morning commute to work or the latest superhero movie. Curator and artist Celeste Hope wanted to bring the power of music to visual art, in more ways than one with the I Love Rock 'N' Roll exhibit. The collection of works, which features art by or about musicians, is currently on display at Studios on the Park in Paso Robles.

Transitions-Mental Health Association (TMHA) is seeking art inspired by living mentally well for consideration as the featured piece in the 2020 Opening Minds art show. This competition is open to individuals of all ages either in recovery or with loved ones in recovery from mental illness and/or a substance use disorder. Only one piece of art will be selected during this juried submission process. The exhibition is scheduled to run Thursday, April 30, through Sunday, May 31, 2020, at Studios on the Park is Paso Robles.

An old piece of jewelry. Keys. The tiny pitcher for the coffee creamer. That old necklace. Seemingly, all these things have nothing in common. But to Kathie Sinor, these are all potential art supplies.

There's more to bringing kiddos to Downtown Paso Robles than hitting up the library and the playground. Take the nonprofit Studios on the Park, for example. At 1130 Pine St., this creative space may look like just another fancy art gallery primed with pretty things for your children to crash into. But ... did you know it has a free kids nook? And workshops for littles? Or, a walk-up watercolor art bar? To be honest, I didn't know either. But, it's true. While Studios is a welcome respite for art-lovers amid downtown's bustling tasting rooms, shops and eateries, it's also a fun spot for your littlest downtown-goers.

While some artists are obsessed with making two-dimensional art look three-dimensional, Paso Robles artist Nancy Vest simply prefers to make art that is actually three-dimensional.

It kept on happening. Even though she was a business major, Deprise Brescia continued falling asleep in her business classes. Oops.

The days of pulling out the old Thomas Guide from the glove compartment are over, but the world of cartography still merits exploration for the history it reveals about how the world was navigated.
