Awaken the artist in you with these SLO County art classes

By Monica Fiscalini

Two Octobers ago I bought a pin cushion that pops up from a Chinese teacup and a pattern to make a stuffed owl. Something about fall weather makes me feel crafty, and again I’m getting an urge. I pulled “Make and Furnish Your Own Miniature Rooms” off the bookshelf the other night.

Will I make and furnish my own miniature room? It’s highly unlikely. I can get artsy and craftsy on my own, but the chances of ending up with a finished product improve greatly if I take a class instead.

Here are a few that look like fun:

Smart Studio 3591 Sacramento Ave., No. 104, San Luis Obispo, http://www.smartstudioslo.com Scrapbooking with Sallie: 5 to 10 p.m. Oct. 18 and every third Friday. Scrapbooking and paper art/mixed media. Cost is $5 and includes materials. Participants must be 21 and older and bringing a drink or snack to share is encouraged. Proceeds benefit the therapy and child development programs of the Child Development Resource Center.

Studios on the Park, 1130 Pine St., Paso Robles, https://studiosonthepark.org Day of the Dead and Halloween class with Anna Meyrick and Dr. Jamey Kirkpatrick: 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 26. For children 8 and older. Cost is $30.

Art Center Morro Bay, 835 Main St., Morro Bay, http://www.artcentermorrobay.com  Papier-mâché workshop with Paula Teplitz: 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 26, Nov. 2 and 9. Cost is $75.

Cuesta College Community Programs, http://www.communityprograms.net  Beginning drawing with Larry Le Brane: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for six Fridays Oct. 18 through Nov. 22. Fee is $118 plus materials. Visit the Community Programs website for information about other art classes starting soon.

Art Bar at Granada Hotel and Bistro, 1130 Morro St., San Luis Obispo, http://artbarslo.com Kissing in the Rain with Skye Ravy: 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 19. The $40 fee includes a canvas, paints, instruction and a cocktail. For those 21 and older. Wine, beer and charcuterie service is available. Art Bar workshops are offered weekly.

In addition to the above spots, be sure to check in every once in awhile with the Cayucos Art Association, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, El Camino Art Association in Arroyo Grande and Allied Arts Association in Cambria for information about ongoing classes for members and the public.
