Topanga Artist Robin Becker’s exhibit, “Afar,” may be an excuse for you to steal away to Paso Robles for a weekend getaway (See “Escape to California’s Central Coast Via Charming Paso Robles,” Topanga Messenger, Vol. 38, No. 7, April 10, 2014) where the show continues through March 29, Robin Becker combines her passion for photography, architecture, portraits and fibers/textiles that has evolved into a large series of photo mixed-media paintings. She prints her photo images on various kinds of cloth, overlaying fibers onto stretched canvas, using paint, pigments, handmade paper and collage elements. Each piece is a unique photo monograph, using layers of color, imagery and words in wet paint.
Her artwork is site specific portraying places she seeks out; Seeing what is left of old remote missions in California; Looking at nearly vanished buildings left in the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico; Remnants of structures that have aged, their pigment fading in Rome, Venice, Florence, Paris, Berlin and New Orleans; Pools of light reflecting a sense of time and space; A shadow glides into a garden landscape.
