We The People

October 1 - 31, 2019
Deprise Brescia's Studio

We stand at a pivotal point in time. As Americans, we need to examine where we are going and how we plan to get there. This show celebrates the diversity of the American people. Together, we are the people our forefathers were thinking of when drafting the constitution.

The artwork featured in this show comes from Deprise Brescia’s art installation, “We Are The People”. It is a giant 12-foot jigsaw puzzle of the United States of America. This month she is featuring the backside of this giant jigsaw people, because it represents the backbone of the United States of America.

The backside of the installation or the United States features the American Flag with the Constitution in crossword or Scrabble form painted on it. This element represents the deconstruction and reconstruction of our Constitution. It was created as something to think about deeply. The constitution is the backbone of the United States of America. It is our forefathers’ ideals of freedom and justice, written from that historic point in time. Their carefully chosen words designed a better way to govern and to live. Their methodical placement of words continues to define our future.

The artwork featured on the front side of the United States displays a mural of faces of the American people. The vast mix of colors and features within the artwork represent the beauty within the faces of the American People. The artwork illustrates our unity and celebrates our diversity.

The original installation is cut out of wood. After a free form drawing of the 50 states, they were cut, sanded and hand painted in acrylic. The work measures 8 feet by 12 feet when put together as a jigsaw puzzle. When the entire installation is netted and displayed with metal hooks, it grows to a length of 15 feet by 9 feet and looks like a webbed net of states.

Each movement of the states has a “Butterfly Effect”, sending change to all things connected. Everything we do has this same “Butterfly Effect”. The work represents the connection each state has to one another. Independent yet connected and effected by one another. The entire work of art took more than 500 hours to create.

The work will be on display along with cards, products and reprints of each of the states with thought provoking sentiments on each of the prints, cards and products.

Wooden replicas of each of the individual states will be made available on special order and take from 2-8 weeks depending upon volume. Shipping is available.

Come celebrate the backbone of America through the month of October with artist Deprise Brescia at Studios on the Park, Gallery # 10 and take home your piece of our country.
