Sashiko Basics - Slow Stitch

This class is the part of a series of classes featuring hand stitched  projects. Slow Stitch is a trendy phrase for hand sewing worked in a  peaceful deliberate manner which helps us unwind from the hustle of  our modern lives. So relax with us and stitch away the week.

This class will focus on the basics of sashiko while making either a zokin or a coaster. Zokin is a Japanese term for cleaning cloth. We’ll use sashiko stitching to repair and refresh old worn dish towels, or to transform a worn out garment into a lovely useful “new” item.

  • You will bring old dish towels (avoid terry cloth), or a garment for  repurposing (will be cut up into smaller pieces). Towels and garments should be natural fiber content only. Can be 100% or a blend of the following: cotton, linen, hemp, wool.
  • I will have fabric on hand for those who cannot bring their own, either because you’re a visitor to our lovely area or you’d rather use new cloth.
  • Included in class fee: floss, floss bobbin, needle pack, and everything else needed for the project.
  • Additional supplies with be available for sale, should you like to make more outside of class.
  • The following tools are also available for use in class: thread snips, thimble, marking tools.
