Silica sand meets with extreme heat, forming basic glass. Light, color and form crystallize it into fine art.
Introduce transparency and texture and one has all the basic components of glass art. Fired with rare metals and old world techniques to contribute remarkable variations in color and reflectivity. Bending, shaping and layering is a process flirting with disaster. But when it works, the results are stunning.
The fascination with glass is the endless characteristics that shift and change as light passes through it. No medium is at once so familiar yet so complex.
Luminous Lightscapes is a fine art glass show conceived by theme but varied in style and technique. Guest curated by glass artist Stephanie Wilbanks and wood sculptor Ken Wilbanks, it displays many disciplines of fine glass art. Blown glass, mosaic glass and fused glass works are featured by California masters of the medium.
