"Edge of Now - The Meaningless Measures and Suspended Chaos"

Art of Lewis Engel

I moved to Templeton in 2019 from LA after a 39 year medical practice as a biological psychiatrist specializing in the treatment. of mood disorders.  I started making images before I went to medical school 56 years ago.  When cleaning glassware in the Organic Chemistry Lab I noticed that acetone made interesting patterns in the bottom of the black sinks used in the lab. I started experimenting with acetone and watercolor paints on small pieces of paper.  The closest I have gotten to an art course was when my son went to art school. I am self taught. 20 years ago I started exploring the magic of magnets. I was intrigued with the power of the repelling force.  I created kinetic magnetic sculptures which I call “Suspended Chaos”.  Then I created a series of humorous gauges, which I called “Meaningless Measures”. I was inspired by a gauge that I misread.  I read the units as millimeters of misery instead of. millimeters of mercury.  While making the gauge faces I learned how to use Illustrator.  I then created computer generated Images based on quotable quotes in different fonts. The title of the image is the phrase that was used to create the image.  I call the images “Emergent Possibilities”.
