America: The Promise

October 26 - November 19, 2017
Atrium Gallery

Curated by WB Eckert

America is more than a geographical location. It is an idea that has sparked the imagination for generations. Based on the ideals of freedom of speech, equal opportunity, and the freedom of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” for all, this ideal has become a beacon of light and hope and a promise of a better life for countless peoples during our relatively brief history.

It is important to keep in mind that this “promised land” of freedom and opportunity is not a done deal. It is a living organism that requires nurturing, renewal of commitment, and constant tending to flourish. In our diversity and freedom of expression, we have experienced vibrant and sometimes heart rending conflicts while attempting to make the dream a reality. In spite of differences, frustrations, and setbacks we realize that the promise of America is a worthy goal. The promise is there, the work of realizing it is ongoing.

This exhibit, “America: The Promise” is a reflection on that premise and idea in the work of the participating artists. Our reflections reveal the ebb and flow of our emotions and observations: pride, optimistic enthusiasm, longing, disappointment, frustration, and sometimes dashed hopes. It is our hope that these reflections are a starting point for the viewers to consider their own thoughts and reflections on what has been done in the past, what is needed today, and what will be required in the future to make America’s promise a reality.
