Aloha Shirts: The Spirit & Story of Hawaii

July 2 - 28, 2019
Atrium Gallery

The Aloha spirit comes to Studios on the Park in this colorful exhibition celebrating the Hawaiian shirt and its proud symbolism of Hawaiian heritage.

From its Polynesian roots to its popularity among American tourists and pop-culture icons, such as Elvis Presley in the 1950s to recent high fashion reincarnations, the iconic flowered garment has not only stood the test of time but transformed with it. The shirts offer portraits of the volcanic archipelago and its many influences and ongoing evolution.

No matter what the shirt means to its wearer, with its bright colors and vivid designs, this little piece of clothing is always imbued with the Aloha spirit of living and treating each other with love, affection, peace, compassion and mercy.

In this exhibition, artists share their own visual interpretations and expressions of the world’s first multicultural garment and the story it tells of Hawaii and its unique island culture.
