I was accepted into the 43rd annual Watercolor West International Juried Exhibition, on display at the Brea Art Gallery through December 18.
Taking watercolor painting to a new level of difficulty, Watercolor West Society continues to exclusively feature transparent watercolor paintings. The gallery exhibits 100 fine watercolor paintings selected from over 1,000 entries submitted from a global community of artists.
I am pleased to announce that Part Two of my three-part series of articles on HDR (high dynamic range) Photography and Printing, "How to Print HDR Photographs (Part Two) – Monitors and Post-Processing," has been posted on the Breathing Color "The Art of Printmaking" blog here. This second part covers monitor calibration and profiling, and the entire HDR processing workflow. Part Three, which will post three weeks from today, will cover the entire digital inkjet printing workflow.
Breathing Color, based in Orange County, California, is a major manufacturer of advanced fine art papers for digital inkjet printing. My relationship with Breathing Color began while I was President of the Central Coast Photography Society, an affiliate of the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. They were one of the generous sponsors of our 2010 Photomorphosis fine art photography exhibition.
I am very honored to be invited to write these guest articles by Breathing Color, and already have people asking me about teaching more classes. If you are interested in taking a class on HDR photography or printing, please email me.
To read the first part, "How to Print HDR Photographs (Part One) — Camera Settings and Color Management," click here. HDR stands for high dynamic range and is a newer digital photography technique that allows photographers to capture the entire tonal range present in a scene, from the deepest shadows to the brightest highlights, without sacrificing one for the other, as was the case in traditional film photography.

I have just learned that my work is featured in an upcoming exhibition at the William Benton Museum of Art in Storrs, Connecticut. "In Retrospect: Art Department Faculty Emeriti, 1961–2001," opens October 29 and features emeriti faculty from every decade and from all across the country.
The year 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the School of Fine Arts and, while the Benton did not become a part of the School until 1997, it is a part of the history of the School. Since 1967 the Museum has hosted the annual art department faculty exhibition. In celebration of the 50th anniversary, the Museum is proud to present a visual time capsule of the Art Department from 1961 to 2001.

To read Part One, "How to Print HDR Photographs (Part One) — Camera Settings and Color Management," click here. Next up will be post-processing and stylizing images, monitor calibration and profiling, more on color management, and the complete printing workflow.

Studios associate Renee Besta's work is on display in Urban Exploration: Beauty in Decay at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. On exhibit in the McMeen Gallery through October 2, the show features images of abandoned refineries, homes, military bases, juvenile offender facilites, rain graveyards and more.
The exhibit is sponsored by the Central Coast Photographic Society. All the artwork in the exhibition were created with the use of HDR (high dynamic range) imaging, a newer digital tool that allows a photographer to capture the full tonal range of a scene, from the deepest shadows to the brightest highlights. Multiple exposures of the same scene are taken in quick succession on a tripod and at a fixed aperture. Only the shutter speed is varied. The images are then combined into one digital file using special software that correctly maps the tonal values, showing great detail throughout the scene. HDR photography has found its rightful place in these types of environmental shots and truly brings out all of the organic tones, textures, and colors inherent in decaying structures.
I will be the speaker at the August 30th meeting of the Central Coast Watercolor Society. Please attend the meeting, 7 pm at the Creekside Mobile Home Community, 3960 South Higuera, San Luis Obispo. Visit www.ccwsart.com for more information.
