Studios on the Park is pleased to host as Guest Associate Artist In Residence, W. Truman Hosner from Michigan. "Somewhere Between Wyeth and Sorolla," his intimate plein-air pastels of landscapes and figures, is available for viewing through May 18.
About W. Truman Hosner
Born in Detroit, 1950, W. Truman Hosner earned his BFA at Wayne State University, and went on to study illustration at The Center for Creative Studies, College of Art and Design in Detroit. During his 17 years as a professional illustrator, his assignments included The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Field and Stream magazine, CBS-Fox Video, and Reader’s Digest. At the peak of a very successful career in commercial art, Hosner refocused himself: Plein-air fine art painting captured his passion, studying under two master painters at the Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona. Over the past two decades Hosner has also been fortunate to have the personal mentoring of Max Altekruse, himself a student of the renowned Frank Reilly of the Art Students League in New York City.
Among his most recent awards, Hosner has achieved uncommon success: from 2009-2011, he has received ‘First Prize’ from the French Pastel Society in Giverny, France, ‘First Prize’ from the American Pastel Society in New York City, and ‘Best of Show’ from the Pastel Society of the West Coast, along with numerous other prestigious awards and prizes.

Mr. Hosner’s philanthropic interests include two on-going efforts over the past 10 years: he spends one day per month at the Children’s Hospital in Detroit, drawing portraits of young patients in their rooms and gifting them to their families, and in 2010 Hosner founded the Café Society Educational Scholarship Fund to assist Northern Michigan coffee house baristas with needed funds to pursue higher education. In addition, in the summer of 2012, a commissioned portrait was auctioned off at a benefit for the Traverse Symphony Orchestra. The entire amount of the proceeds from the auction, nearly $9,000, went to the TSO.
