Larry Le Brane’s whimsical sculpture and fine craft blends a love of manipulating unusual materials, detailed craftsmanship, with a street-wise & academic background. After a childhood of sketching, and a high school without art classes, he received an M.F.A. degree from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. He taught fine art at Orange Coast Community College in Costa Mesa, CA for over 30 years.
Now living on CA’s Central Coast, Larry's a full-time artist with studios in Los Osos and San Luis Obispo. He's also a selective scavenger, haunting thrift shops and yard sales for castoffs he combines with colorful fused glass into eclectic 3-dimensional designs. Larry continues to teach Fused Glass & Drawing workshops throughout San Luis Obispo County.
Larry shares, "Fused glass challenges me on several levels. I enjoy combining the precision of science with my aesthetic vision to design light-catching objects that become either crafts or sculpture. Ideas come from everywhere. An old recycled treasure or a funny word will “spin off” new ideas for the next “dance”, my next creative quest.
I like experimenting with glass and unexpected materials to solve physical & artistic challenges that arise. It’s a process of exploration, discovery, & resolution. Usually, I have a vague idea that starts me, but I never know where the journey will take me."
